Unlocking the value of culture through wellbeing

QWB Lab is a new initiative, a joint venture of InsightUnlocked with economic design firm BureauHaus.

QWB Lab aims to capture the value that cultural organisations provide in a more holistic way – through harnessing the wellbeing they generate for individuals and society, and measuring that value.

The Challenge

How to unlock the multifaceted value of museums

  • Culture organisations deliver value in many ways, yet can find it hard to express this value
  • Audience numbers and economic impact studies are often used as measures, but are short changing what the arts do
  • The time of the Coronavirus has made it clearer to more people that the arts contribute to wellbeing
  • Yet funding, resilience and sustainability of the arts are under much pressure
The Opportunity

A system to capture the value of culture through wellbeing

  • Wellbeing is ‘wealth’ – a store of value – to society that enhances its resilience.
  • The OECD recommends an alternative to GDP to measure national performance more holistically: wellbeing
  • Global wellness market estimated at USD4.1trn
  • Wellbeing is increasingly discussed in the context of arts & culture

We believe that there is wellbeing in many areas of museums and that this value for its visitors and wider society can be unlocked, measured and articulated to reframe how museums are perceived.
This is what we are developing with funding support from the Cultural Sector Innovation Fund – Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture & Heritage.

The QWB Lab Manifesto
  • We believe in the value of arts and culture for the wellbeing of individuals and that wellbeing is a ‘wealth’ – a store of value – to society that enhances their quality of life and resilience.
  • We are inventive in using technology and science to help culture organisations harness value in areas not previously considered.
  • We unlock this value through and for wellbeing and thereby want to shift perceptions of the culture sector.
  • We are connecting organisations on this pathway.
  • We are transformational.
  • Our work re-invents how to make the case for greater investment in and better resilience of culture organisations and thereby greater wellbeing for communities and individuals.
